The Challenge: Shade Without Wall Attachments
In 2020, the Town of Caledon issued a public bid to enhance the newly constructed library’s outdoor patio space with shade solutions. The goal was to provide a comfortable, sun-protected environment for readers and visitors while maintaining the architectural integrity of the building—meaning no structural attachments were permitted on the new construction.
Enter Shade Sails Canada
Shade Sails Canada responded with a custom solution that went beyond expectations. Leveraging our in-house design and rendering services, we created a comprehensive visual and technical roadmap that impressed town officials and won us the bid. Our approach prioritized budget-friendly innovation, safety, and architectural harmony.
Instead of mounting to the building, the shade system was designed using freestanding posts, allowing for a fully independent structure. By integrating our design into every stage of the planning and installation process, we ensured zero interference with the building façade while delivering a highly functional and aesthetically pleasing solution tailored to the needs of the Southfield Community Centre.
The Solution: Three Interlinked Custom Shade Sails
To fulfill the project vision, we installed three custom interlinked Shade Sails, engineered to provide:
-
UV protection and enhanced safety for visitors
-
Cool, shaded areas for outdoor reading and community gatherings
-
A visually striking addition that complements the library’s architecture
These sails were built with our Commercial Grade Shade Sails, known for their durability and architectural appeal. Each sail is tensioned precisely to ensure longevity and resistance to high winds—a key consideration for public-use spaces.

Free Span Fabric Structures
Free Span Fabric Structures
A Free Span Fabric Structure is a cable-reinforced, high-tension shade sail stretched between multiple anchor points. The sail can be attached to existing buildings and/or engineered posts designed to handle significant loads.
These structures are suitable for both small and large areas and are especially visually striking when the attachment heights are varied to create hyperbolic (twisted fabric) shapes. While the posts are permanent, the fabric can be removed during winter or heavy storms.
Free Span Fabric Structures are used across a wide range of applications, including restaurants, playgrounds, seating areas, public parks, storage spaces, and event venues.
